It was another working weekend for us.
We took the opportunity to engage with the community before the class in November.
This was our first face-to-face interaction with this particular community since we started FUNTIME@KNOTs last year.
It made a lot of difference in parental support when we take the initiatives to connect with the parents and learners before deploying any programmes.
It also gave us room to gauge their level of commitment in# allowing or enabling their children to attend our classes.
Some may think we are merely doing programme development and implementation.
However, the work of building communities goes beyond programme implementation. These personal touches, like establishing and building rapport with the learners and parents eventually will help contribute to achieving the programmes' outcome and pave the way to other opportunities.
Yesterday, it was a triple celebration for the learners:
1⃣ We celebrated the brave and courageous presenters who took part in our FUNTIME@KNOTs showcase. Learners took home a set of our Founders' Edition Backyard Detective Kit. The kits were sponsored by Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS);
2⃣ We rewarded learners for their active participation in classes. Learners were awarded gold stars each for their initiatives. At the end of each cohort, learners can exchange the cumulated gold stars for book and stationeries, among others. Our shoutouts to individuals who have generously contributed to our online Gold Stars Award prize store.
3⃣ Learners also took home souvenirs from Yayasan Cemerlang, which awarded us with the social impact grant and the main sponsor of Cohort Two FUNTIME@KNOTs virtual sessions.
We would like to thank the organisations and individuals for their generosity. We are currently looking for in-kind contributions for our next class. If you are interested to explore collaboration or contribute prizes, such as stationeries, books, or any donation in kind, you may write to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Yayasan Cemerlang 's focus on ensuring access to quality education for the underserved has been our mainstay since we were established in 2011.
In the early years, we concentrated on giving scholarships to deserving Malaysians to pursue tertiary education in our local Universities. Presently, we have 161 Alumni Scholars from this endeavour.
Yayasan Cemerlang's collaboration with KNOTs (Knowledge New Old Twists) marks our inaugural foray into enhancing English skills and digital literacy for primary school students from Desa Mentari and Seri Pantai.
It was heartwarming indeed to witness the transformation of Malaysians between the ages of 7-12 years in terms of confidence in speaking English and digital literacy during the recent virtual showcase event.
The necessary intervention programs for primary school students from underserved areas needs to be continued by as many NGOs as possible. By making the right impact at the primary school level, we could definitely change the lives of many of our young Malaysians through education. A job well done KNOTs (Knowledge New Old Twists) !
We had the fifth5️⃣ class of the second cohort last night. One thing that is consistent in FUNTIME@KNOTs is that we always manage to inject fun into the lessons, regardless of the topic of discussion. Truly an embodiment of the FUNTIME@KNOTs spirit. Children and adults alike, learn better when they are having fun.
Last night's topic was "Food Preservation", which also brings the discussion on consumption patterns and food security issues into perspective.
We had learners pronouncing words like "food preservation" confidently, much to our surprise and delight. As teachers/facilitators, it was one of our proudest moments.
Having been with this group of young learners for more than a year, we have recorded various notable improvements in their language and digital literacy skills. It goes to prove that in community development, consistency, acknowledgment, and relevant opportunities to the target groups will contribute to positive outcomes.
Community builders, what would be your formula for success? We love to hear from you.
Special shout-outs to our KNOTteers, Li Ann Kon, Siti Nur Hidayah Ismail, and Raof, for their commitment and assistance. This goes out to the rest of KNOTteers as well, who have contributed their evenings to ensure FUNTIME@KNOTs ran like clockwork - Nabilah Ariffian, AmiraZaidat, Markus Stein, and many more.
21 April 2022 Engagement session with KNOTS on the social impact grant initiative to empower underprivileged communities.
It was a sight to behold, and one I did not expect to see inside a Power Station. But there they were, a beautiful flock of birds ascending upwards in graceful flight amidst various types of flora and fauna and a most serene lake. The opportunity to witness this ongoing commitment of the Manjung Power Station as stewards of nature was a very rewarding feature of a fascinating short tour of the vast man-made island that produces enough electricity to power millions of households in Malaysia. Thank you to the Managing Director, Tuan Hj Zaini, for giving Yayasan Cemerlang the opportunity to explore partnerships in community development in and around the Power Station. With the flourishing ecosystem I saw, due to the endeavour to have harmony between people and the planet, the promise of the beginning of a beautiful friendship is very possible.

The opportunity to join a session organised by KNOTs (Knowledge New Old Twists) recently clearly demonstrated that with dedicated and committed teachers, be it as volunteers from different professions, critical thinking skills and love for the country and environment can be embedded in primary school going Malaysians. I truly enjoyed the time spent with my fellow Malaysians from different ages. It was fun and heartwarming to watch learning, taking place amidst peals of laughter, innocence, and enlightenment. Yayasan Cemerlang recently awarded KNOTS with a social impact grant to enact positive change in an underserved community through education.

"It was an utmost privilege to have been given the opportunity to catch up with TYT Tun Dato' Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi bin Hj Abdul Razak recently in Penang at the iconic and historic Eastern and Oriental Hotel. I first met TYT Tun Dato' Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi in Washington D.C more than 20 years ago at the Embassy of Malaysia in his capacity as a diplomat serving our beloved country. Years later, now and then, we would meet during seminars or functions back in Kuala Lumpur. I was truly humbled and honoured to meet him in Penang in his current capacity as TYT Penang. Truly a visionary and emphatic leader. Penang is in safe hands." ~Dr. Hafriza Burhanudeen, Yayasan Cemerlang
"It has been over 20 years at least since I last visited Penang and January 2022 is a momentous return in conjunction with a catch up session with one of Yayasan's Founders, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Andrew Sheng at Think City. The outcome was expected when you are with a thought leader such as Tan Sri Andrew; I went away with much better clarity of strategy, vision and ideas on the planning and execution of philanthropic mechanisms and systems to serve our needy Malaysians better" ~ Dr. Hafriza Burhanudeen
